Share

An advisory panel overseeing a study of possible health problems among workers at the Rocketdyne division of Rockwell International’s Santa Susana Field Laboratory will hold its first meeting today.

The meeting, which begins at 2 p.m. at the Simi Valley Library at 2969 Tapo Canyon Road, is open to the public.

The 13-member panel will review the plans to hire an independent contractor to determine whether Rocketdyne workers suffered health problems because of their exposure to radioactive materials and chemicals.

The Santa Susana site is located just outside Simi Valley near the boundary of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

The study is expected to begin Nov. 1 and take up to 18 months to complete.

The research is being conducted under the auspices of the California Public Health Foundation in association with the California Department of Health Services.

It is funded by a U. S. Department of Energy grant.

The advisory panel is made up of state and federal officials, labor and community representatives and four independent scientists.
