SAN DIEGO SPORTS ET CETERA : Aztecs Win Two Games in Volleyball Tournament

San Diego State rolled through its first two games of the ASICS Grand Prix volleyball tournament Friday at Peterson Gym with a pair of three-game sweeps.

SDSU defeated University of San Francisco in the first match, 15-5, 15-12, 15-9, and followed with a 15-4, 15-8, 15-6 victory over Baylor.

Gracie Schutt had 21 kills in the victory over USF and Jennifer Miller added 11. Setter Pam Hope had 39 assists in two games.

Schutt had a game-high 15 kills against Baylor, while Miller had 11. Miller had seven blocks.

Northwestern, which beat Villanova and San Francisco, was the only other team to win twice in the tournament’s opening day.

University of San Diego dropped its opening matches at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational, falling to host UCSB, 15-5, 15-8, 15-6, and to the University of Michigan, 15-11, 15-8, 10-15, 15-9.

Amy McMahon had 16 kills against Michigan, while Nikki Wallace had 13 (and eight blocks) and Maria Rickard had 10. Liz Gunsaulus had a team-high seven kills against UCSB.

The United States women’s volleyball team dropped a 15-10, 15-10, 15-11 decision to Japan at Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu in the first of a three-match tour played in Hawaii. The Americans, who finished third at the Summer Olympics, were swept in three matches they played earlier this week in Japan against he fifth-place Japanese.

The U.S. team played without four of its Olympic starters, Caren Kemner, Paula Weishoff, Kim Oden and Elaina Oden--they signed contract to play professionally in Italy. Also leaving the team for Italy were Elaina Oden, Tara Cross-Battle and Ruth Lawanson.

Former Hawaii All-America Teee Sanders and setter Lori Endicott are the lone remaining starters with the team. Sanders led the U.S. with 18 kills, followed by Daiva Tomkus (15) and Tammy Liley (12).

MEN’S SOCCER

The University of San Diego, behind freshman Guillermo Jara’s two goals, beat CSU Northridge 2-1 in a non-league home match Friday night.

The Toreros (3-0) scored the game-winning goal 18 seconds after Northridge (2-1) tied the score at the 79:51 mark.

SDSU took the first game in a men and women’s doubleheader and remained undefeated by routing non-league foe Biola, 6-0. The blowout, in front of 117 fans, began when Aaron James scored at the 12:30 mark. Willie Franklin followed with two goals and then James added another for a 4-0 lead over Biola (0-5).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

SDSU posted its first victory ever against a top 20 team with a 3-0 victory over 16th-ranked UC Santa Barbara at Cuyamaca College.

Shawn Viloria scored at the 38:20 mark to give the Aztecs (1-1) the win.

Leanna Jay and Kim Komara added goals in the second half. UCSB is 3-1.
