SOUTHWEST ROUNDUP : Texas A&M; Holds Off Stubborn Tulsa, 19-9

Greg Hill ran for one touchdown and caught a touchdown pass in the second half to help No. 7 Texas A&M; overcome four turnovers and defeat upset-minded Tulsa, 19-9, Saturday at College Station, Tex.

Eric Lange of Tulsa kicked field goals of 22, 40 and 42 yards. The Hurricane held a 6-3 halftime lead and had hopes of upsetting the Aggies for the second year in a row.

But Hill gave the Aggies a cushion when he scored on an eight-yard touchdown run on the first drive of the third quarter.

With 12:57 left in the game, Hill caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Granger. Terry Venetoulias followed with a pair of 36-yard field goals as the Aggies avenged last year’s 35-34 loss at Tulsa.

Hill finished with 125 yards in 26 carries.

Southern Methodist 28, North Texas 14--Kevin Shepard ran for two second-half touchdowns and Brian Berry scored on a 65-yard touchdown pass play to lead the Mustangs at Dallas.

Shepard replaced starting running back Rongea Hill, who sprained his left ankle during the third quarter. Shepard had gains of 20, 11 and two yards before his first one-yard touchdown gave SMU a 21-14 lead.

SMU sealed the victory with an 89-yard drive aided by a North Texas penalty that wiped out an interception in the end zone.

Texas Tech 49, Wyoming 32--Robert Hall passed for two touchdowns and ran for another and Byron Morris rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Red Raiders at Lubbock, Tex.

Morris gave Texas Tech (1-1) a 28-24 lead midway through the third quarter with 51-yard touchdown run.

Wyoming (1-1) pulled to within 35-32 on a three-yard scoring run by Dwight Driver and a two-point conversion with 8:32 to play.

Lloyd Hill of Texas Tech caught 12 passes for 222 yards, tying the school record for receptions in a game.

Texas Christian 17, Western Michigan 17--Jeff Wilkinson of Texas Christian kicked a 39-yard field goal with 1:51 left to salvage the tie at Ft. Worth.

Brad Tayles passed for 336 yards for Western Michigan (0-0-1).

TCU’s Manvel Hopes intercepted Tayles’ pass at the Horned Frogs’ 44 three plays later to set up Wilkinson’s game-tying kick.
