Between talks for his 1993 contract, defending champion Nigel Mansell won the pole position for today’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

The Briton, who already has clinched the 1992 world drivers title, was busy at the Monza autodrome trying to negotiate an extension of his contract with Williams-Renault for next year.

McLaren, which has signed Michael Andretti for 1993, is seeking a second driver in case dethroned world champion Ayrton Senna leaves to join Williams.
