‘Changing Schools--Any Way They Can’

Share

Your Aug. 23 article, “Changing Schools--Any Way They Can,” was exciting and sad. Westside parents trying to get their children a good education are taking their kids out of Los Angeles Unified and placing them into Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Culver City schools.

The sad part is that these caring parents are made to feel like criminals. Because of a bureaucratic maze that makes school transfers difficult, many parents are providing false addresses and phone numbers to school officials so that they can get their children into better schools. Once in the good schools, whole families are forced to live a lie as parents must “sneak” their kids to school, and children must lie to their friends and teachers about where they live. This is an outrage!

There is an alternative. I invite all parents participating in these supposedly “criminal” activities to join me in support of the “Parental Choice in Education Initiative.” This initiative will take the guilt out of getting your child a good education. It will legalize your now “criminal” activities.

It also will benefit those parents who want to take their child to a better school but have chosen not to sneak or lie. Now, they too will be free to choose.
