COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Cook Undergoes Knee Surgery

UCLA quarterback Wayne Cook, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first half of the Bruins’ season-opening victory over Cal State Fullerton, underwent four hours of surgery to repair two torn ligaments in his right knee Monday at the UCLA Medical Center.

Gerald Finerman, the UCLA team physician, reconstructed the anterior cruciate ligament using a patella tendon graft from Cook’s knee. Finerman also repaired the medial collateral ligament, which wasn’t as badly damaged as first thought.

With backup quarterback Rob Walker replacing Cook as the starter, Bruin Coach Terry Donahue said freshmen Ryan Fien and Scott Fitterer and senior John Barnes, who transferred after UC Santa Barbara dropped football, will compete for the backup quarterback job. “None of these players have had enough work or time in the program to be properly evaluated,” Donahue said. “We’ll take at least three quarterbacks to BYU.”
