Newport Harbor, Gonzales Run Past Ocean View

Running back Steve Gonzales rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown to lead Newport Harbor to a 33-0 victory over Ocean View Thursday at Newport Harbor.

Gonzales, whose five-yard run with 8 minutes 58 seconds left in the first half gave the Sailors (2-0) a 14-0 lead, also had one of three Newport Harbor interceptions, two of which resulted in scores.

Newport Harbor’s backfield trio of Gonzales, Wade Tift and Colin Morris combined for 284 rushing yards. Tift gained 64 yards in 14 carries and Morris totaled 62 yards in eight carries.

Dan Vaughn opened the scoring with a one-yard run with 20 seconds to play in the first quarter to cap a 12-play, 87-yard drive. Gonzales’ interception set up Doug Stuckey’s 30-yard field goal with 3:56 left in the half. After Phil Bloomberg recovered a fumble, Justin Ketcham made the score 24-0 at the break with a one-yard run with 43 seconds left in the half. Kenny Miles completed five of 16 passes for 26 yards. Ocean View is 0-2.

Chad Labass caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Gregg Williams in the third quarter to make the score 30-0. Stuckey kicked a 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
