A premium winery owned by staunch Republicans has scored a knockout with a $5 wine dubbed Rece$$ion Red.

It happened at Gainey Vineyard, in a section of Santa Barbara County known for wine, horse ranches and celebrity retreats.

Owner Dan Gainey found himself awash in low-quality red wine at a time when the market was also glutted. The solution was to blend the cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir and merlot, releasing it two months ago as Rece$$ion Red.

They produced about 1,000 cases, and now they wish they had more.

Serious wine sellers such as Douglas Marjerum, owner of Santa Barbara’s Wine Cask shop, say it’s good stuff for the money. He had both red and white bottled to sell under his house label.
