San Gabriel : Better Access for Disabled
A planned street improvement will be postponed, and the federal funds earmarked for it will be used instead to improve access for the disabled at City Hall and the Civic Auditorium.
The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to use up to $289,748 in Community Development Block Grant funds to remodel restrooms, doors and other features in both buildings and to install an elevator at City Hall to meet federal rules.
City Administrator P. Michael Paules said care will be taken to make the improvements compatible with the historic nature of the two buildings.
The construction of sidewalks and gutters and the installation of new paving on Benkamp Street and on Palm Avenue will be deferred, Paules said.
