It was a family affair as Monterey Park Councilman Fred Balderrama was installed as the city’s new mayor last week at a special council meeting at Luminarias Restaurant.

Balderrama, one of 15 children, had his brother Gilbert lead the flag salute, his mother, Lupe, present him with the mayor’s gavel and another brother, Danny, introduce dignitaries in the crowd of about 300.

California Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy administered the oath of office, saying he was impressed with Balderrama’s “legions” of family members.

Balderrama takes over the council’s top post from Samuel K. Kiang. Councilwoman Marie T. Purvis was installed as mayor pro tem.

* The Pomona City Council selected Councilman Tomas Ursua as the city’s vice mayor for the next eight months. The council confirmed Ursua in his new post by a 5-0 vote.

* Diamond Bar Assistant City Manager Terence Bellanger has been promoted to city manager. Bellanger served as city manager in Rolling Hills and Brea and as assistant city manager in Union City before becoming a Diamond Bar assistant city manager two years ago. His appointment last week fills a vacancy left by former City Manager Robert Van Nort, who resigned last spring to become city manager of Chino Hills. Bellanger’s salary will be $91,200 yearly, matching Van Nort’s.

* Bill Todd and Jerry Jones were reappointed to the Bradbury Planning Commission by the City Council. Their new terms will expire in September, 1994.
