A FORUM FOR COMMUNITY ISSUES : Second Opinion / COMMENTARY FROM OTHER NEWSPAPERS : PANORAMA (Russian) : We Learned English; Others Will, Too

From a column by Si Frumkin, staff political commentator, in Panorama, a Russian-language weekly published Tuesday in Los Angeles. Translation by Ludmila Genn

I have roamed from country to country and wherever I lived I always tried to adapt myself to the “natives” and never demanded that they should adapt themselves to me. Recently a law has been passed which obliges the state (of California) to provide ballots, all electoral information, education and God knows what else to people who don’t have a command of English. The price for this stupidity will go up to the tens of millions of dollars.

By the way, among non-English speaking minorities you will not find former Soviet Jews. They have never demanded bilingual education for their children.

(The lawmakers) don’t realize that Koreans, Pakistanis and various Hispanics and Europeans come here not to build new Pakistans, Koreas or Salvadors. They came to America to become Americans to live in America and to speak its language.
