Al Del Greco might be small but he proved to the Kansas City Chiefs that he can make the big kicks.

The 5-foot-10 Del Greco ignored the taunts of the Chiefs to kick a 39-yard field goal in overtime Sunday and give the Houston Oilers a 23-20 victory.

“Neil Smith was jawing at me and started calling me ‘Pee Wee,’ ” Del Greco said. “After I made it I kind of mouthed something to him. As big as he is, it probably wasn’t very smart.”

It was the third field goal of the game for Del Greco, who also had kicks of 31 and 54 yards. The game-winner came with 1:55 elapsed in overtime.

Holder Greg Montgomery called time out before Del Greco’s kick, but that didn’t bother him either.

“Greg was smart to call time because the clock was down to 14 seconds,” Del Greco said. “That didn’t bother me. I felt we could take our time instead of rushing to beat the clock.”

The Oilers (2-1) came to life in the second half after they went to the locker room trailing, 13-6, with boos from the Astrodome crowd ringing in their ears.

Warren Moon, who passed for 527 yards against the Chiefs two years ago, had two passes intercepted but completed 19 of 28 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday.

Moon’s eight-yard touchdown pass to Leonard Harris tied the score, 13-13, and a 21-yarder to Ernest Givins gave the Oilers a 20-13 lead with 3:15 left in regulation.

The Chiefs (2-1) forced overtime on Todd McNair’s four-yard run with 23 seconds to play. McNair ran four times for 29 yards and caught three passes for 24 yards in the game-tying drive.

“The only way that drive could have been any better would have been if we could have scored eight points,” Chief quarterback Dave Krieg said.

In overtime, J.J. Birden fumbled when he was hit by cornerback Cris Dishman after catching Krieg’s pass. Doug Smith recovered for the Oilers at the Chief 23, setting up Del Greco’s winner.

“I wasn’t thinking anything. I was just tired of playing defense,” Doug Smith said. “I saw that ball and I thought, ‘First down for the offense and I’m on the bench drinking cold water.’ ”

The Chiefs built their halftime lead on field goals of 31 and 52 yards by Nick Lowery, and Krieg’s five-yard scoring pass to McNair.

Lowery’s 52-yarder gave him an NFL record 19 field goals of 50 yards or more, breaking the record he shared with Morten Andersen of the New Orleans Saints.
