The shootout between John Elway and Randall Cunningham was no contest, thanks to the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense.

The Eagles, led by Reggie White, Clyde Simmons and Seth Joyner, limited Denver to 82 yards in a 30-0 victory over the Denver Broncos Sunday.

“We knew coming in that they were a great defense,” Elway said. “But they just manhandled us. It was an old fashioned butt-kicking and they did the kicking.”

Elway completed eight of 18 passes for 59 yards, was sacked three times and had a pass intercepted. The Broncos had 52 yards rushing and a net of 30 passing.

Elway, who said he couldn’t remember having a worse day, threw for 96 yards in 1986 against the Eagles. He went five for 10 for 47 yards in 1989 against the San Diego Chargers. He had an 88-yard game against Minnesota in 1990 and threw for 82 yards against the Vikings last season.

“When you play against a defense like that on a team that has a shot to go to the Super Bowl, you like to see how you stack up against them,” Elway said. “We didn’t stack up.

“I was frustrated, but I was always hopeful we were going to make the big play. We weren’t able to do it.”

Cunningham completed 18 of 25 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns in addition to running for 46 as the Eagles started 3-0 for the first time in 11 years.

The Eagles led, 3-0, after one quarter on Roger Ruzek’s 50-yard field goal and stretched it to 17-0 at halftime after Cunningham passed 24 yards to Calvin Williams and 34 to Fred Barnett for touchdowns. Cunningham and Williams hooked up on a 49-yard score in the third quarter and Ruzek added field goals of 35 and 27 yards.

Denver (2-1) had not been shut out since a 42-0 loss to New Orleans in 1988. It was the Eagles’ first shutout since they beat Dallas, 24-0, last September.
