Chrysler Takes Harassment Case to Supreme Court: Chrysler Corp. asked the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse a lower court ruling that ordered the reinstatement of a male employee fired for sexual harassment in January, 1989. The auto maker sought the reversal after an appeals court upheld an arbitrator’s ruling that the assault was not an “extremely serious offense, such as stealing or striking a foreman.” Chrysler fired the man at its parts plant in Beaver Dam, Wis., after he touched a female co-worker’s breasts. Chrysler said an investigation showed that the man had a history of sexual assault and harassment in the workplace. The appeals court that affirmed the arbitrator’s decision in April, 1992, rejected Chrysler’s argument that to reinstate a sexual harasser would violate public policy against sexual harassment in the workplace.
