The Los Angeles Board of Education on Monday accepted a $3.9-million federal grant to expand job training for South - Central Los Angeles residents whose livelihoods were affected by the recent civil unrest.

The yearlong endeavor will expand programs and hours at four district-run employment preparation centers to accommodate up to 1,000 new students, said Jim Figueroa of the district’s adult education division. The project targets South - Central residents who are at least 16, have lost jobs and have been unable to find work since the riots.

The program will be coordinated by the county, the district and the Los Angeles Community College District.
