BEIJING : Getting Closer
South Korean President Roh Tae Woo is to arrive Sunday in China on a four-day visit that will include the first summit meeting between the two former enemies.
Roh will meet President Yang Shangkun and other Chinese leaders as the two countries move closer after establishing diplomatic relations in August. South Korean officials have expressed hope that Roh might meet senior Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, 88, who is officially retired but remains China’s most powerful figure.
Chinese soldiers fought alongside North Korean forces against South Korean and U.N. troops in the 1950-53 Korean War.
In recent years, eased tensions between the two nations have allowed economic relations to grow rapidly. This is a process that Roh’s visit is expected to push forward.
