GM Strike Deadline Nears: Efforts to avert a strike at GM’s body plant in Lansing, Mich., continued even as contract negotiations between the United Auto Workers and General Motors Corp. appeared to have reached an impasse. The union warned GM last week that the 4,200 members of Local 602 might strike the Lansing plant today at 10 a.m. EDT if local grievances were not resolved. A strike at the plant would halt production of three GM compacts-- the sales-leading Pontiac Grand Am, the Oldsmobile Achieva and the Buick Skylark.
