NEW YORK — Retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf says he was considered as a vice presidential candidate by the campaigns of Bill Clinton and Ross Perot but rejected the idea.
In an interview with Barbara Walters to be aired today on ABC’s “20-20,” the Gulf War commander said he had been approached by the Bush, Clinton and Perot camps “to give them support,” and he indicated that “my name was mentioned . . . as a vice presidential candidate” by people from the latter two organizations.
“But I told them the same thing I’ve told everybody else. I am apolitical. I do not want to be a pawn in a political campaign,” the retired four-star general said.
