MACON, Mo. — Frank P. Briggs, a newspaper publisher who succeeded Harry S. Truman in the U.S. Senate and served as an assistant secretary of the interior, has died.
Briggs was 98 when he died Wednesday.
He was elected to the Missouri Senate in 1932 and served until 1944, when he was appointed to complete Truman’s U.S. Senate term after Truman became vice president. Briggs was defeated in 1946 when he sought election to a full term.
Briggs, who bought the Macon Chronicle-Herald in 1924, returned to the newspaper and continued as editor or publisher until he sold it in 1973.
In 1961, President Kennedy appointed him assistant secretary of the interior for fish and wildlife.
