From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Pacific Telesis Steps Up Study of Possible Split: The telecommunications holding company announced that it has retained Salomon Bros. and Lehman Bros., two New York-based investment banking and brokerage firms, to help analyze the financial implications of breaking up the company into its regulated telephone businesses and its non-regulated high-tech telecommunications ventures. The two investment groups will look at ways the two new companies could be financed, including locating potential sources of new money for the divested companies. The PacTel board has been studying a potential division since April and could announce a final decision as early as next month.
