Residents of the southern town of Vaison-la-Romaine began burying their dead as the death toll from this week's flash floods climbed to 36, equal to the worst storm disaster ever recorded in France. Thirty-six people also were killed in an October, 1958, storm in the neighboring Gard region. Jean Daubigny, governor of the region hardest hit by torrential rains and flooding, said he expects more victims. Twenty-four people are officially listed as missing.
