THOROUGHBREDS : Local Riders, Horses Fan Around the Country
Several of Southern California’s top horses and riders will be in action around the country today.
The $350,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity in Chicago is headed by Gilded Time, the speed burner who broke his maiden at Hollywood Park, then set a track record in winning the Sapling Stakes in New Jersey. Gilded Time will be ridden by Chris McCarron.
Kent Desormeaux will try to pad his lead over McCarron in the national money standings by riding nine races at Pimlico today in the Maryland Million Festival.
Breeders’ Cup Sprint hopefuls Superstrike and Star Of The Crop square off at Bay Meadows in a $150,000 Breeders’ Cup-sponsored event at six furlongs. Among the opposition is stakes winner Waterscape, making his first start since last November, with Pat Valenzuela aboard.
At Fairplex, the $40,000 Derby Trial will be run today.
On Sunday, Swaps Stakes winner Bien Bien leads a top-heavy California contingent in the $750,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs. Vying Victor, Star Recruit and Fax News are also running.
