Protecting Software: Rainbow Technologies Inc. in Irvine has unveiled its Vendor System, a compact-disk, read-only-memory technology that allows a software publisher to control access to programs stored on disks.

With the Vendor System, a software developer can distribute a number of programs on a single compact disk and remotely control access to the data, depending on whether the customer has paid for use of the programs.

Rainbow Technologies, which makes hardware and software aimed at fighting computer software piracy, said the system could help developers register more customers.

The Vendor System now is available for DOS, Windows and Macintosh operating systems. UNIX and OS/2 operating system versions will be available in 1993.
