Long Beach : 2nd Street Will Get Wider Sidewalks, 9 New Signals

Sidewalks along 2nd Street in Belmont Shore will be widened next year, and the city will put in nine new traffic lights to make strolling the area safer for shoppers and to help promote business.

“It is a return to yesteryear,” said Councilman Doug Drummond, who represents the area near Alamitos Bay at the southeast corner of Long Beach. “We’re making it more pedestrian friendly.”

The sidewalks from Quincy Avenue to Bay Shore Avenue will be widened from 10 feet to 13 feet to provide more room for merchants who display newspapers and other wares outside their stores.

Officials expect the $2.9-million project to be complete by next July. The project will be funded by parking meter revenues from the area, officials said.
