CHESS RESULTS : Spassky Wins, Cuts Fischer’s Lead to 5-3

Boris Spassky defeated Bobby Fischer on Wednesday in Belgrade in the 12th game of their $5-million rematch. The two former world chess champions resumed their match in a new locale after a nine-day break.

Almost 1,000 spectators attended Wednesday’s game, the first in Belgrade. The match’s first half was in Sveti Stefan, an island resort off the coast of Montenegro.

Fischer leads the match, 5-3 with four draws. The 13th game is scheduled today. The match will continue until one player wins 10 games. The moves of Wednesday’s game are listed below.
