Athletics in the Los Angeles Unified School District were spared--at least for the moment--when the board of education delayed voting on cuts to meet a $400-million shortfall in the district’s $3.88-billion budget.

The board is in the process of trimming the 1992-93 budget to minimize salary cuts that could run as high as 13.5% for district employees. The final vote on budget cuts is scheduled Friday.

Mark Slavkin, the lone board member to continually support athletic cuts, still may propose the elimination of $3.7 million slated for athletics. He has maintained that corporate sources would step forward to subsidize sports.

“I will raise it on Friday and speak to it,” Slavkin said. “My strong feeling is that it will not pass.”
