Edmond Clinton II; Helped Recall L.A. Mayor in ’38

Edmond J. Clinton II, who as a youth helped his father, Clifford Clinton, organize the radio broadcasts that were credited with the recall of Los Angeles Mayor Frank Shaw in 1938, has died.

His brother, Donald, president and co-owner of Clifton’s Cafeterias, which Clifford Clinton founded in 1931, said Edmond was 71 when he died Saturday of liver cancer in Pasadena.

Their father was at the forefront of a recall movement that charged Shaw, the police chief and district attorney with ignoring the gambling, prostitution and fraudulent contracts then prevalent in Los Angeles.

The Clintons sponsored about 1,000 radio broadcasts during the successful recall campaign. Later, Edmond Clinton joined his father in founding the Meals for Millions Foundation, a program to feed the hungry in more than 100 nations.

Edmond Clinton became president of the California Restaurant Assn. and a director of Goodwill Industries and the downtown YMCA.

Besides his brother, he is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen, five sons, a daughter and four grandchildren and his sister, Jean Clinton Roeschlaub, a Clifton’s co-owner.

A memorial service is scheduled Tuesdayat 7:30 p.m. at La Canada Presbyterian Church.
