BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Atlanta’s Smoltz to Start Game 1
Right-hander John Smoltz will be Atlanta’s starting pitcher when the Braves open the National League playoffs next Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirate.
Manager Bobby Cox said the Braves will go with a three-man rotation in the best-of-seven series, which opens at Atlanta. Steve Avery will start the second game and Tom Glavine will pitch Game 3 at Pittsburgh.
The rotation leaves out Charlie Leibrandt and Pete Smith, the fourth and fifth starters during the regular season.
Catcher Javier Lopez will replace injured Greg Olson on the playoff roster.
