Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a Ventura County man Friday during a drug raid at his home in the hills above Malibu.

Donald Scott, 61, was shot twice in the upper torso, Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies said. A Los Angeles County sheriff’s narcotics unit went to Scott’s residence at 35247 Mulholland Highway at about 8:40 a.m. to serve a search warrant, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman Rich Erickson. They were looking for marijuana believed to be cultivated on his 200-acre ranch in a brushy canyon area in unincorporated Ventura County, Erickson said.

As deputies entered the home, Scott emerged from a bedroom armed with a .38-caliber revolver and confronted the deputies, Erickson said.

“Deputies ordered the man to drop the gun, but he pointed the weapon at them,” Erickson said. Two deputies fired several rounds, striking Scott in the upper torso, killing him, he said.

Helen Plante, 37, whom Erickson identified as Scott’s live-in girlfriend, was detained at the scene but later released. The names of the officers involved in the shooting will not be released until the investigation is completed, he said.

By late Friday, officers had not completed a search of the property to locate the suspected marijuana field, officials said.
