Ryan Hancock passed for 385 yards and three touchdowns in his first collegiate start to lead Brigham Young to a 30-9 victory over in-state rival Utah State on Friday night.

Hancock, a pitcher for BYU’s baseball team, began the season as the No. 3 quarterback but moved up when starter John Walsh and backup Steve Clements were sidelined by injuries.

BYU of the Western Athletic Conference improved to 2-3 overall, while Utah State of the Big West fell to 1-4.

Hancock’s touchdown passes went for 25 yards to Otis Sterling in the first quarter; for 67 yards to Kalin Hall in the second quarter, and for 65 yards to Eric Drage in the third quarter.

He finished with 20 completions in 40 attempts with two interceptions.

Drage was Hancock’s favorite target, catching eight passes for 196 yards.

Utah State quarterback Tony Cavillo moved the Aggies well at times, but Utah State bogged down each time it got close to the BYU end zone.

Utah State got inside the BYU 10 yard line three times, but the Cougar defense allowed two 26-yard Sean Jones field goals. Jones also had a 47-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Cavillo finished hitting 26 of 57 passes for 266 yards. He did not give up an interception.

Utah State kept the score close during the first quarter, countering Hancock’s scoring pass to Sterling with Jones’ first two field goals--the second coming after Doug Stone recovered a fumble by Jamal Willis at the Utah State 35.
