Monterey Park : Major Budget Cuts Weighed During Planning Session
Faced with a $550,000 shortfall triggered by the state’s budget pinch, the City Council is considering cuts in all departments except police and fire.
At a special budget session last week, City Manager Chris Jeffers presented the council with a deficit-reduction package that he said would make up for property tax revenues taken away by the state without requiring layoffs.
The council, which has yet to approve a budget for the 1992-93 fiscal year, supported the majority of the proposed cuts and suggested a few others, including the elimination of $300-per-month car allowances for all department heads except the police and fire chiefs and the city manager.
Another cost-saving tactic posed by the council Tuesday is a shift to a four-day workweek--Monday through Thursday--for city employees. Jeffers estimated that such a move would save from $20,000 to $30,000 per year in utility costs.
Jeffers said he will incorporate the council’s suggestions into a revised budget proposal that will be presented in the next few weeks.
