College of Canyons Adding 12 Courses for Fall Semester

While other California colleges and universities reduce classes and faculty, College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita is adding 12 popular courses to its fall semester already in progress.

The full-credit classes for the shortened semester, which will include English, psychology, history, journalism and speech, will be taught at an accelerated pace, said Sue Bozman, spokeswoman for the two-year college.

Registration for the new classes starts Monday. To ensure full credit for students, classes will meet the regular number of hours, Bozman said. For example, a class session that normally would last one hour will instead be lengthened to 90 minutes, she said.

The added cost of the new classes will be about $21,000, Carter Doran, the college’s assistant superintendent and vice president, said. Money for the classes is available, he said, “because the state budget allows payment to colleges for basic-skills classes above and beyond the traditional state limit on community college funding.”
