San Diego Police officers shot and killed a man who threatened downtown passersby Saturday with a gun.

The unidentified man, who is in his 30s, was struck by gunfire several times near the intersection of 14th and E streets, Sgt. Mike Smith said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two officers first confronted the man in front of a restaurant near 12th and B streets, where he earlier fired a shot into the ground, police and witnesses said.

The man walked east, refusing officer’s orders to halt and to drop a duffel bag he was carrying, Smith said. At 14th Street the man turned on officers and drew an automatic pistol, firing once at officers who were standing about 10 feet away, Smith said. Officers returned fire, Smith said.

The officers were uninjured. Their names were not immediately released.
