Bill Anton and His Successor

The commentary by Christina K. Wash (Sept. 28) is unfortunately another sign of the brewing insensitivity toward a growing minority. She claims that voicing our opinion to appoint a Latino as the interim superintendent is “ethnic chauvinism.” Let me set the record straight. This is not about picking one ethnic minority over another, this is about fairness and parity for a population that is constantly overlooked.

The reality is that 64% of children in the LAUSD are Latino. Not only is the current Latino population a factor but statistics show that by 1995 the Latino population in Los Angeles will require 160 additional elementary schools and middle schools and an additional 15 high and special elementary schools. It seems only logical that a qualified Latino should succeed Bill Anton.

My statements were prompted by the knowledge that LAUSD already has an able, highly qualified, bilingual, bicultural and deserving leader. That person is Dr. Ruben Zacarias, currently deputy superintendent. It is crucial to appoint a superintendent who will understand the needs of L.A.’s diverse community.

We are not asking for special treatment, rather we are asking for equal treatment. We are asking the board to be fair, just and realistic. This is not about obsession with ethnicity. This is about serving the changing needs of our city.
