SOUTH ROUNDUP : No. 14 Virginia Stays Among the Unbeaten

Terry Kirby rushed for 214 yards in 24 carries and scored three touchdowns as No. 14 Virginia defeated Wake Forest, 31-17, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game Saturday at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Kirby scored on a 73-yard run on the game’s first play. He caught a five-yard pass from Bobby Goodman with 5:53 left in the third quarter, lifting Virginia, 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the ACC, to a 24-7 lead.

John Leach’s seven-yard run midway through the fourth quarter drew Wake Forest (1-3, 0-3) to within 24-14.

No. 17 Syracuse 15, Louisville 9--Terry Richardson and Al Wooten scored on short runs to lift the Orangemen at Louisville, Ky.

Syracuse (3-1) moved the ball 63 yards in eight plays for its winning score, a one-yard run by Richardson off left tackle in the third quarter. Quarterback Marvin Graves ran for a two-point conversion.

Louisville (1-4) lost its third consecutive game.

No. 25 Clemson 54, Tennessee Chattanooga 3--The Tigers, who haven’t lost to a Southern Conference team in four decades, missed three field-goal attempts but still scored on eight of 14 possessions at Clemson, S.C.

Clemson rolled up its third-highest offensive total and ended a two-game losing streak. Tennessee Chattanooga is also 2-2.

Maryland 47, Pittsburgh 34--John Kaleo passed for a school-record 415 yards as the Terrapins ended a nine-game losing streak and gave Coach Mark Duffner his first victory.

Maryland (1-4) overcame deficits of 10-0 and 27-24 behind Kaleo, who completed 24 of 37 passes, three for touchdowns. Marcus Badgett caught 11 passes for a school-record 251 yards and two touchdowns.

Alex Van Pelt completed 26 for 46 passes for 395 yards and four touchdowns for Pitt (2-3).

North Carolina 28, Navy 14--Natrone Means scored two touchdowns and Randy Jordan scored on a 65-yard screen pass to lead the Tar Heels (4-1) over the Midshipmen (0-4) at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Southern Mississippi 33, Tulsa 24--Lance Nations kicked a 21-yard field goal with five seconds left to break a tie, and Southern Mississippi (3-2) then intercepted a desperation pass and returned it for a touchdown at Hattiesburg, Miss. Tulsa is 1-4.
