Stranded Mountain Biker Rescued by Marine Helicopter After Injuring Ankle
A mountain biker was airlifted from an isolated trail Sunday evening after he injured his ankle and was stranded, Orange County Fire Department officials said.
The man was on the trail, about five miles east of Caspers Wilderness Park, for more than two hours before he could be reached by a rescue helicopter from El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.
The man, whose name was not released, was flown to an ambulance at the U.S. Forest Service San Juan Station on Ortega Highway, said Steve McClellan, communication manager for the Orange County Fire Department.
“He took a spill on the mountain bike and hurt his ankle,” McClellan said. “He was down on a part of the trail that was impossible to reach by ambulance. But the helicopter was able to reach him, and he was taken to the hospital.”
The man was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo for treatment, McClellan said.
