Quayle Bringing Campaign to L.A. Area Today

Vice President Dan Quayle hit hard at Democrat Bill Clinton in campaign stops in Tacoma, Wash., Palo Alto and San Francisco Monday before arriving in Los Angeles, where he will campaign today.

“Gov. Clinton wants to travel the road of more taxes and more regulation,” Quayle told lumber mill workers in Tacoma. “President Bush wants to lower taxes, to have less regulation and to get the government off your back.”

The vice president then flew to the Bay Area to repeat his theme at two fund-raising receptions for California GOP Senate candidate Bruce Herschensohn.

Quayle plans to address a Republican breakfast this morning in Encino before visiting with hospital staff members at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood. He also plans to speak at the Northrop Corp. plant in El Segundo.

Talking to the loggers in Tacoma, Quayle accused the Democrats of putting environmental interests ahead of jobs in the struggling timber industry.

“The Democrats like to talk about putting people first, but I guess they make an exception for the timber industry,” Quayle said. “We believe in protecting endangered species, but we also believe in fighting for jobs and families and communities.”

In a local television interview before flying to California, the vice president also renewed his criticism of the entertainment industry, calling it “a non-government institution that has a dramatic impact on our lives.”
