BEIJING : The Succession Question

A Communist Party congress, which typically comes once every five years, is due to next open Monday to deal with issues of leadership succession and economic reform.

The congress, likely to last about eight days, will endorse and push forward senior leader Deng Xiaoping’s policies of market- oriented reforms and opening to the outside world, according to advance reports in the official Chinese media.

The 1,991 delegates will elect a new Communist Party Central Committee, which in turn will revamp the ruling Politburo. Personnel changes at these levels could affect the ultimate succession to Deng, 88, who is formally retired but remains China’s most powerful leader.
