Applied Biosystems of Foster City, Calif., makes instruments and products for life science research. The deal, already agreed upon by the boards of both companies, calls for Perkin-Elmer to swap 0.678 shares of its stock for each share of Applied Biosystems. The closing of the merger, expected by early 1993, is subject to approval by shareholders of both companies and by regulators.
