AMD Reports Big Jump in 3rd-Quarter Profit: Citing cost controls and a double-digit sales gain during a usually slow season, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reported a threefold jump in third-quarter profit. AMD, a leading maker of semiconductors, earned $46.5 million, or 51 cents a share, in the three-month period ended Sept. 27, up from $14.5 million, or 16 cents a share, for the third quarter of 1991. Sales rose 23% to $356.6 million from $289.3 million. For the first nine months of the year, AMD’s profit grew to $167.6 million, or $1.84 per share, from $30.7 million, or 35 cents a share, for the same period a year ago.
