SANTA ANA : Recreation Project Contracts Awarded

Share

The City Council has awarded more than $2.3 million in contracts for recreation projects, including new soccer fields at Centennial Regional Park and the “Monkey Island/Amazon’s Edge” exhibit at the Santa Ana Zoo.

After a slide presentation by city staff, the council awarded a $1.1-million contract to Rowland Heights-based Javaid Contractors Inc. for the construction of three new soccer fields at Centennial Park. The new fields will be have a computerized irrigation system, a 10-foot high perimeter security fence, restrooms and locker facilities, and 250 additional parking spaces.

The new playing areas are important additions for the city because the four fields that are now reserved for soccer are overused and difficult to maintain, said Allen Doby, executive director of recreation and community services. The new fields may be open as early as February.

“It’s going to be really pleasing to have this new recreational facility,” Councilman Robert L. Richardson said before the vote. “It’s been a long time in coming and we’re excited to see it coming along.”

The council also awarded a $1-million contract to Javaid Contractors for the “Monkey Island/Amazon’s Edge” exhibit at the Santa Ana Zoo. The exhibit, which focuses on South American flora and fauna, will feature an island populated by howler monkeys and capybaras, large aquatic rodents. The exhibit will be surrounded by a 20-foot-wide moat complete with simulated mud and rock formations.

A report to the council shows the bid was 2.5% less than city’s original estimate for the project. Construction of the exhibit, part of the zoo’s 10-year, $10-million expansion program, should begin in November and be completed by next summer, said Ron Ono, park landscape design manager.

The council also approved $214,000 to Long Beach-based Excel Paving Company for renovation of courts and walkways at Memorial, Adams, Alona, Cabrillo, Flower, Bomo Koral and Portola Parks.
