South Whittier : Neighboring City May Quit Assistance Plan
South Whittier leaders may lose a key ally in their efforts to bring services such as increased law enforcement, graffiti removal and recreation programs into their unincorporated community.
Neighboring Santa Fe Springs may have to pull out of a three-year assistance plan next year because of cutbacks in its budget, officials announced recently.
“This is not political or philosophical. It’s a matter of dollars,” said Joe Castro, Santa Fe Springs administrator in charge of the assistance program. “We have three years of hard work invested in this project and we would like to find a way (to) keep that continuity going.”
Over three years, Santa Fe Springs has invested about $1 million and assigned four staff members to help the volunteer South Whittier Community Coordinating Council. Six other city staff members also served in South Whittier but were paid by the county.
