The city has received an award for its 2-year-old Neighborhood Pride program, which has targeted 52 residential streets for improvements.

More than 40 city programs in the state were nominated for the California Healthy Cities Project Outstanding Achievement Award. Half Moon Bay and San Fernando were also named as award winners.

Officials with the California Healthy Cities Project say the awards honor cities that have initiated programs and policies that “preserve and promote individual and community health.” The city will be honored at a special reception Monday in Los Angeles.

“San Clemente’s leaders, community organizations and residents have worked together to create and maintain healthy environments,” project director Joan M. Twiss said.

The Neighborhood Pride program was developed in response to run-down properties and increasing crime within the city center. City officials work with residents and absentee landowners in target areas to keep homes up to city codes. The city also organizes cleanup days in the neighborhoods and provides federal grant funds for home remodeling and revitalization projects.
