To monitor the flow of things into the ocean is a straight-ahead assignment. Compared with putting a missile detector with a reaction time of five seconds in orbit, it should be a breeze.

Surely the society that can create an earth-rattling airplane can produce capable, responsible human beings with an interest in taking an hour or two a day to monitor the flow of industrial waste and other crap heading for the sea, who can track down and put an end to such streams of dangerous contaminants and who will find and bring into line those who are doing the polluting.

It’s not a job that takes incredible brilliance; there are only a few sources of gunk that can do the kind of damage we are being told about. And the economy won’t fall apart because we protect our water supply.
