City officials honored the first Los Angeles woman police officer killed in the line of duty with a memorial plaque unveiled Wednesday that substitutes the word “officers” for “men.”

The plaque in front of Parker Center police headquarters, was changed to read: “In memory of the officers of the Los Angeles Police Department who have given their lives in the line of duty.”

Officer Tina Kerbrat, 34, had been with the department about 10 months when she was shot Feb. 11, 1991, as she and a partner confronted two men on a North Hollywood sidewalk. She had graduated from the police academy in October, 1990.

Her partner, Officer Earl Valladares, returned fire, killing the gunman, Jose Amaya, 32.

“Her sacrifice enabled her partner to capture two people after a gun battle, perhaps saving other lives,” Chief Willie L. Williams said at a ceremony unveiling the new memorial.
