CHESS RESULTS : Fischer Traps Spassky, Now Leads 6-3

Share

Bobby Fischer won Game 16 of his $5-million rematch with Boris Spassky on Wednesday, his first victory since the match shifted to Belgrade, Yugoslavia, eight days ago. Fischer now leads, 6-3, with seven draws. He needs four more wins to end the match.

Wednesday’s game was decided in the opening. Playing Black, Fischer lured Spassky into a position that had been considered favorable to White for 30 years. But Fischer’s 14th move revealed a new idea that overturned that assessment. Although Fischer later described his idea as “an old trap,” it was new to Spassky and to other grandmasters.

The 17th game is scheduled today. The moves of Wednesday’s game are listed below.
