Texas to Play Two Games With SDSU in Basketball
The University of Texas basketball team will play in San Diego twice in the next five years as part of an agreement allowing the Longhorns out of this year’s Texaco Star Classic basketball tournament.
The Longhorns, after signing a contract to participate and play Washington State in the first round of this December’s tournament, balked when they learned that the Aztecs had invited Azusa Pacific--an NAIA school--as the tournament’s fourth team. Texas then signed a contract to play Utah, another Western Athletic Conference school, on ESPN on Dec. 18--the opening night of the Aztec tournament.
SDSU officials were forced to attempt to enforce the contract or scramble. They chose to add North Florida--another NAIA school--as the tournament’s fourth team. Texas, meanwhile, has agreed to play at SDSU twice from 1993 through 1998, according to Fred Miller, SDSU athletic director.
“Our job is to solve problems, not create them,” Miller said. “DeLoss Dodds (Texas athletic director) is one of the classy guys in this business. He has his position, I have mine. We worked out a mutual accommodation.”
