BASEBALL / NATIONAL LEAGUE REPORT : AROUND THE LEAGUE : Doughty May Join Dodger Front Office
Sweeping changes expected to be made by the Dodgers during the off-season might not be limited to the field.
Sources say Larry Doughty, a former Pirate general manager who worked as a Dodger scout this season, has discussed ideas for a front-office job when his contract expires at the end of November.
A position that Doughty might accept, according to sources, would be director of scouting and minor league operations. No such position exists, but the Dodgers have been heavily criticized in both areas, despite recent improvements.
“I have not been offered a job. I don’t know if there is a job there,” Doughty said from Atlanta, where he is scouting the National League championship series.
But Doughty stressed that the need for his current scouting job will end after the expansion draft, and that he is eager to return to a front-office spot.
“I had a great year seeing young players,” Doughty said. “But my makeup says that I should be involved in decision making.”
Doughty helped build the Pirates, including making the acquisition of shortstop Jay Bell.
