Coach Larry Smith expressed mixed feelings when asked if he is happy that the Trojans, who play their first home game Saturday against Oregon, have three road games behind them.

“I am from the standpoint that we’re coming home,” Smith said. “I’m not from the standpoint that I felt we should have won all three. I’m disappointed and I’m angry, and I think the players are, too.”

USC is 1-1-1 after tying San Diego State, defeating Oklahoma and losing to Washington.

Smith, asked if he is surprised that USC’s defense has developed so quickly: “You say quickly. I thought it was going to come together last year, and it didn’t.” . . . USC’s Curtis Conway leads the Pac-10 with an average of 102.3 yards receiving per game. Conway, who leads the Trojans with 19 receptions for 307 yards, had 21 catches for 240 yards last season. . . . Oregon’s Tommy Thompson, a junior from Lompoc High, tied a school record when he kicked five field goals last Saturday during a 30-20 victory over Arizona State. “He is probably the most talented kicker I’ve ever coached, at any level, including four years in the NFL,” Coach Rich Brooks said.
