Share

The president of the National Organization for Women will come to Ventura County Sunday to stump for women candidates for state and national offices.

Patricia Ireland will appear with Democratic congressional candidate Anita Perez Ferguson and Democratic state Assembly candidate Roz McGrath at a 7 p.m. rally at the hall of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, 3994 E. Main St.

Ferguson is battling Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) to represent the 23rd Congressional District. McGrath is running against Oxnard Mayor Nao Takasugi for the 37th Assembly District seat. Ireland is also campaigning for California’s two women candidates for the U. S. Senate, Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Barbara Boxer (D-Greenbrae).

Ireland has been traveling nationwide campaigning for women candidates, said Jamie Cox-Nowland, coordinator of NOW’s Ventura-Oxnard chapter.

But California’s political races are particularly important to the group, Cox-Nowland said.

With Feinstein and Boxer, “we have an opportunity to double the number of women in the U. S. Senate” from two to four, she said.
